--- Jody and the English Club in Brovary ---
We had a wonderful time at our meeting on Sunday! Before I left the house that morning, I was very concerned I wouldn't have many students. I was afraid of this because I only had four people come to club the month before and because we were in the middle of having our first real snow (6+ inches by noon). I told Andrew before I left that I had been sad for several days before then thinking no one would come. I was praying for God to bring the people He wanted me to teach, even if it was only a few. Despite the bad weather, I had 10 people in class. We sang songs, learned American idioms, and discussed specific questions and common situations. About half of the people who came were not believers. I was very excited and thankful. I truly felt the Lord had brought those people there.
Please pray I will be salt and light to them. It is such a privilege to be able to teach them English and get to know them all.
--- Wendy the Motorcycle Missionary ---
It's good when you can laugh at yourself. Being a missionary gives you plenty of opportunities to do just that. One Sunday, this past summer, while trying to use my developing Russian ear, I heard about a missionary named Wendy who was raising funds to buy a motorcycle to minister between villages. That sounded very interesting, so I would perk up my ears each Sunday after that, trying to here more about Wendy and her motorcycle. Sure enough, every few weeks I heard how missionary Wendy was progressing toward her goal. Finally two Sunday's ago I got the full story. I was sitting in church when I heard that "missionary Wendy" would be at church today. Well it, so happened, that "missionary Wendy" was running late, so I had to wait until the end of the service to finally see Wendy and her motorcycle. When the time came a short man with dark skin and dark hair walked in. He started speaking in English but with a heavy accent. He talked about his ministry and how they were providing motorcycles to pastors in remote rural villages in northern India. He thanked the church for providing the funds for one of these motorcycles. What? Where's Wendy? What does India have to do with this? Then it all became clear. I wasn't hearing a Russian speaking pastor say "Wendy" with an accent sounding like "Vindy". It was the pastor saying "V Indy" which is Russian for "In India". Boy did I feel stupid. But it was great to see the Ukrainian church with a missionary passion of its own--sending its own missionaries and supporting work around the world. I'll leave you with these words from the Indian Missionary to think out. He said "As I walked around Kiev I was struck by the freedom you have to worship freely, something my brothers and sisters in northern India do not have." He said this about Kiev a city of the former Soviet Union. God is at work, but there is a lot more to be done. Please pray for persecuted church.

Here are some more things to be praying about:
- Continue to pray for progress on Elena's new prosthetic. We go in next week to see how the initial casting fits.
- Please pray for health in the family. It is cold season and we already have a few coughs, scratchy throats and runny noses. Also pray for safety as we walk on ice almost everywhere we go.
Thank you for your prayers,
Andrew Hawes
